Last month, the general assembly of the United Nations University Solving the E-waste Problem (StEP) initiative accepted the Electronics Sector for membership. StEP was founded to “address the need for analysis and dialogue from a neutral, scientific-based standpoint in order to find solutions which reduce environmental risk [from end of life electronics] and enhance development” of responsible methods for recycling, reusing or disposing of this equipment.

As providing solid scientific understanding of issues around sustainability issues is key to TSC’s mission, StEP is an opportunity for the electronics sector to engage internationally in this space for e-waste. “StEP and TSC coming together means we’ll have better ways to measure the effectiveness of take back programs,” said Mike Watson, Director of Take Back for Dell. “This represents great progress and helps customers know that parts inside their end of life computer equipment are responsibly disposed of.” Further information on StEP and its activities may be found at www.step-initiative.org.
