Packaging

Mission & Goals

The Packaging Working Group was founded on the understanding that packaging plays an important role in every consumer product, and that sustainability research in this arena is paramount. Packaging protects the product, delivers the product, and influences the marketing of the product; the packaging group is focused on finding ways to provide more sustainable packaging without sacrificing these objectives.

Scope

The Packaging Working Group was founded in January 2011. The group is creating information modules that can be used in the Sustainability Measurement Reporting System (SMRS) for all sectors within The Sustainability Consortium. Packaging collaborates on research projects with other sectors and looks further at packaging assessment tools.

Research

The group is comprised of a research committee and an operations committee, which was created to work on sector outreach and to develop a plan to seek alignment with the packaging industry. The group has adopted the Global Protocol on Packaging Sustainability (GPPS), formerly known as the Global Packaging Project. The GPPS will be used sector-wide when packaging is to be considered.

Projects

LCI dataset gap analysis to address the following:
  • Identification and data quality evaluation of existing life cycle data set inventories relevant to the packaging sector.
