Matt is the Sustainable Business & Innovation Manager for Burt’s Bees, a global natural health care and beauty brand. Matt has been with Burt’s Bees since 2012 and leads sustainability across all business functions and throughout the value chain.
As a member of the Burt’s Bees Innovation Leadership Team, Matt is responsible for guiding product innovation and portfolio improvements that align with the brand’s commitments to people and nature. He spearheads strategy on circularity and oversees the brand’s landfill-free operations and carbon neutral practices. As Vice President of the Burt’s Bees Foundation, Matt guides community stewardship activities that protect biodiversity and reconnect people to nature.
Matt has had a varied career with a common thread: service that reaches across boundaries. Before joining Burt’s Bees, he was head of sustainability for a technology company in North Carolina, a consultant to high impact social enterprises fighting poverty in El Salvador, a community economic development policy advocate in Washington, DC, and a Small Enterprise Development Peace Corps Volunteer supporting women’s cooperatives and girls’ education in Benin, West Africa.
Matt holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in economics, international relations and political science and an MBA from the Yale School of Management. Matt is an Eisenhower Fellow, an avid international traveler, and a beekeeper. He lives in Durham, NC, with his wife and two children.
